Setup

Make yourself comfortable with some Rum and Coke, and plan on playing through the night. You see, what separates Caribbean Stud Poker from other poker games is that instead of gathering around with your best buds, smoking as you pick through your hand, you go mano y mano with the dealer. That doesn't mean you can't invite your friends over to spend some quality time, but Caribbean Stud Poker is a two-player game where you all try to take the dealer down instead of each other. Of course, you can rotate who gets to be the dealer and which player is up at bat.

Rules

Playing Caribbean Stud Poker isn't rocket science, but you need the chops to play it. Once you've made yourself comfortable sitting across from the dealer, maybe your best friend who still owes you twenty bucks from taking him to the cleaners last week with Texas Hold 'em, Caribbean Stud Poker has each one in making an ante bet before the dealer deals five cards face down.

Of course, the dealer also deals himself five cards, but face up. Now, the fun-or dare we say, attempts to cheat and look at each other's cards-begins. Needless to say, keep your cards close to the vest and keep the chit cat down because there will be plenty of time to do that once you win.

Get Your Chips Ready: The Betting Stage

The first bet is the ante bet, which essentially goes into the pot that, of course, you will win because you're getting first-hand advice. After the cards are dealt and the dealer has his cards showing for everyone to see, it's time to get serious about how much you're willing to put up or shut up. If you think your hand sucks, before you go off the deep end about how unfair the dealer is, you can fold and take your lumps. Or, you can say to heck with it and raise it by throwing some chips onto the table.

But remember, you're not betting against your pals, you're all trying to take down the dealer. With the dealer having his cards face up, you might just have the chance to take him to the cleaners. But don't put all your chips in one basket; take your time and make them stretch. If you decide to raise, prepare to wager at least twice the ante.

The Dealer Makes His Move

Once everyone throws their chips in, the dealer reveals the other players' hands and yours, too. Whoever has the highest hand wins, or if it is the dealer, try not to cry as you hear the agonizing sound of the chips sliding to his corner. For the dealer to win, the hand must have an Ace and a King. Unless this occurs, you can at least break even from your ante bet, and your raises will come back to you. But if the dealer does have an Ace and King, try not to shed your tears because the dealer wins. But, if you carefully made your wagers, at least you are still in the game.

Setting up the Turns

If you're playing at an online casino with a live dealer, the convention is for the player to the left of the dealer to receive the first card. In other words, the dealer deals counterclockwise. When you're playing with your friends at home with beer and pizza, you can follow that order or decide to shake it up. No matter what you decide, stick with the arrangement, especially the dealer. If the dealer misdeals, don't go forward with the hand.

Also, it's common with poker, like other card games, for the dealer to burn cards. Burning cards is when the dealer removes them from play. If you trust the dealer, respect their decisions to throw those cards from gameplay.

Sharpen Your Skills and that Poker Face

Even though Caribbean Stud Poker is still a game of chance, it does take skill. It still follows traditional poker rules, especially when trying to form the strongest hand possible. Straights, four and five of a kind, and, of course, the royal flush are hands that Caribbean Stud Poker players strive to get. While the payouts are massive, they still carry a lot of risk, so place your chips accordingly. When in doubt, there's never anything wrong going with the angle of making small and calculated risk.

Caribbean Stud Poker is really a show 'em or shut style of poker. After the dealing, you compare hands with the dealer. It's up to you to raise or fold, especially since you know the dealer's cards because they are face up. The royal flush in Caribbean Stud Poker usually pays 100:1, but it's important not to bank and put all your chips in one basket.

Wild Cards

Most Caribbean Stud Poker games aren't played with a joker or a wild card that can substitute for the other cards. However, if you're playing with your friends, you can decide to relax the rules. But, be sure to discuss so everyone knows where they stand before you make the ante bet.

The Winner

So, now the time has come for you to show your hand. Again, if the dealer doesn't have an Ace or a King in their hand, the ante and the raise bets are pushed back to you.

Drinking, Sinking, and Having Fun

Nobody likes to lose, but please try not to be a sore loser. If you lost fair and square, simply move on. Maybe decide to sit out the next hand and enjoy some more Rum and Coke. But don't go too heavy with the drinks, because you need your mind sharp to win the next round and more. When you're ready to go home, consider calling a taxi or an Uber, especially if you've been drinking. Also, friends don't let friends drink and drive. If one of your buddies has been going to town with the Rum and Coke, consider letting them crash at your place or call them a Lyft.

As always, please remember to drink responsibly! This alcohol drinking game is not meant to lead to you becoming sick due to over-consumption of alcohol. Need a sober ride? Save $5.00 by riding w/ Lyft! If you enjoyed it, please leave feedback in the comments & let us know how we can make it better!
